I believe one of the goals of a
good video is to not draw attention to itself.
But even without the distracting glitz, good looking
video doesn't just happen. When an audience sees an attractive image of a person
talking, they may not think of the 3, 4 or even 5
special lighting fixtures plus silks, flags, scrims,
cookies, bounce cards and gels carefully arranged to
make that image look “natural”. |

| When they see a handsome image of a
building’s exterior, they don’t think of the camera
operator setting up out in a nearby field in the
pre-dawn cold and darkness to be ready to capture the
best angle of morning light. But those are the kind of
things I do to make my camera subjects look their best.
Not
artificially so, just naturally so. I sometimes think when
producers incorporate unusual angles, odd lighting,
flashy graphics or conspicuous edits, they were simply
unwilling or unable to find the drama and interest inherent
in the subject. |
